Reading
Please can you make sure your child has their reading book and Learning Journal in school every day and get them, or yourself, to write in their reads. These will go towards their reading badges each term. They need to do 40 reads to receive their next reading mileage badge.
Beat That & General Maths Facts
Every Friday, we will continue to send home the Beat That test that your child completes in class. Please show an interest in the score your child gets and work with them to make small improvements each week. All Y6 children are expected to have a general knowledge of: measure facts including time, volume, area, perimeter, length, weight and capacity (Learning Journals p127 - p136). Children spending ten minutes a day learning these facts will be able to tackle a range of problems much more easily and quickly.
Literacy
This term is all about being able to show consistency when writing using correct punctuation, spelling, grammar as well as creative vocabulary and awareness of the audience. The learning children produce in their books will be the evidence used to form a judgement about the level they are working at.
Maths
We will be spending time this term consolidating learning and completing the Y6 maths SATs. There will be a continued focus on arithmetic and reasoning (more complex, written word problems).
Understanding the World
In science, through investigations within lessons, children will learn about how to keep their bodies healthy. This will include investigations into: circulation, diet and exercise. The aim will be to encourage children to be able to look after their health both now and throughout their lives.
Relationships and Health Education
As a part of a specific week focussed on community, we will think about how we belong to our communities, such as our school community, our country and what being British means.
In the summer term, there will be a lot of science-based learning about growing up and how our bodies and feelings will change as we get older. In addition to this, the children will learn factual information about staying healthy, including why some people take drugs (this will include legal drugs such as everyday medicines) and the risks of both legal and illegal drug taking.
Physical Development
Both classes have outdoor PE on Friday and indoor PE on Tuesday. Children will need to have a PE kit in school for these days. Please ensure your child has a white T-shirt and black shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings and trainers for these sessions.
We will be focussing on athletics and striking and fielding skills.
Expressive arts
As the end-of-year show will feature heavily this term, drama, music and art will all be high profile.
What your child can do to help with their learning
As you will know from last term, we have an expectation that each child reads at least four times a week. Regular reading is proven to show a progression in a child’s vocabulary and their writing benefits too. Enjoy reading with your child: books, magazines, recipes, game instructions or newspapers! Use Rollama to help with spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. Use Mathsbot (primary KS2 compact) to help revise arithmetic skills).
This is some of the key vocabulary we will encounter during our science topic. Your child could investigate the meanings of these words and make a glossary with the words and the explanations.
addiction arteries blood vessels capillaries
